2009 8th Grade Game Recaps for 8th Grade 2009 8th Grade: Coach Ramblings Another great group of baseball players will soon walk the halls at Prosser High School and this group has the talent to put Prosser back on the baseball map. If they stick together, stay away from the temtations that high school life presents, and keep working hard--they will be playing a lot of games in late May in the next 4 years. They are as solid on defense as last years team, play great OF defense, and they have a the best 1-2-3 pitching punch I've seen since 1992. The greatest gift they have is practicing and playing the game of baseball with passion. Coach Baker and I enjoyed every minute with these boys, we'll miss them but will have fun following their careers at PHS. Unfortunately Coach Baker will take his talents to God's country and enjoy life as a Cougar at Washington State. He will be sorely missed and life with Wade will be very difficult. 8th graders we will miss you, but will enjoy watching you grow and learn more about the greatest game in the world. Harrison #2: (7-3) The season fanale was played in constant rain but the outcome was never in doubt. Prosser wrapped up their successful season with a 19-0 win over the visitors from Sunnyside. Ryan Fassler started the game, gave up one hit, walked 3 and stuck out 9 batters in 3 innings of work. Daniel Broussard pitched the 4th inning and only faced 3 batters. He struck out his very first batter and kept the hitters off balace with a variety of fastballs and curveballs. Chris Pedrosa took to the hill for his first appearance of the season in the 5th. Pedrosa didn't disappoint either as he struck out every single batter that came to the plate. His blazing fastball was just to much for the visitors to handle. On the offensive side of things, just about every batter had a hit and in the 3rd inning we sent all 15 batters to the plate and did not record an out. Wapato: (6-3) Traveling to Wapato is always an adventure. This year was no different but the Colts were able to overcome both opponents and prevailed with a 10-2 win bolstered by a fine 6 inning pitching performance by Kyle Killian. Killian finished the shortened game with a season high 14 strikeouts, giving up only 2 hits and 2 runs, one earned. Job Yepez supplied plenty of offense to support Killians mound effort going 2-3 with 2 rbi. The Colts scored in each inning, with Payden Teel, Yepez and Sterling Clark scoring 2 runs each. Nick Meza, Jake Tolcacher, Killian and Yepez all had at least one rbi. This is a solid win for the Colts who pushed their season record to 6-3 and finish the season against Harrison on Wednesday, May 13th. Yepez: 2-3, 2 runs, 2 rbi, double, stolen base West Valley Black: (5-3) For the second year in a row, Prosser stunned the Gold by overcoming a huge lead in the last inning to secure the win. This years version saw the Colts erupt for 9 7th inning runs to snatch a 14-9 victory from the Gold. Using 4 hits (2 from Nick Meza), 6 walks and a hit batter the Colts killed any thoughts of West Valley trying to reclaim the lead. The 7th inning started off with a walk to Colt Manus, Jake Tolcacher being hit by a pitch, and Brandon Metheny walked. Meza then hit his 2 run single followed by an RBI single from Kyle Killian and another from Job Yepez. Clay Dragoo, Payden Teel, Sterling Clark and Tolcacher all walked and scored on another single by Meza. In all we sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 9 runs. What was especially encouraging was the 13 hits we had for the game. Meza: 2-6, run, 3 rbi Sierra Vista: (4-2) The Colts hit the road again and prayed the rain would stop long enough so we could get this game in. The rain cooperated and watch the Colts drop a close game 4-3. The exciting part is our pitchers only gave up one hit, but 4 walks, on hit batter and a couple of errors allowed Sierra to score all their runs in the 3rd inning. On the other side of the diamond Prosser only managed 3 hits and 1 RBI.
Harrison: (4-2) Wed the Colts traveled to Sunnyside to witness the debut of a young Nolan Ryan, a young Tom Seaver and two awesome double plays. Andrew Cox pitching in his first game of the season was he stuck out 4 batters in 3 innings, walking one and scattering 3 hits. In the first inning Cox was a recipient of a beautiful double play that started with a catch by centerfielder Colt Manus. With a runner tagging on the fly ball to centerfield, Manus fired a strike to relay man Kyle Killian who also threw a strike to catcher Payden Teel who had to wait for the runner to arrive and get tagged out. Cox’s only run given up was unearned and the only reason the runner reached base was a result of an overthrow to the first baseman. Brandon Metheny had his first ever pitching experience in the last two innings of the game. His first ever inning was a perfect 1-2-3 inning, thanks to a brilliant double play turned in by Nick Meza. Nick did have to dodge the second baseman who tried hard to stay out of the way as Meza fielded the ball, touched second and fired a strike to first to complete the double play. Metheny finished the day with a strikeout, 3 hits and allowing 2 runs. This 10-3 win pushes the Colts record to 4-2 and they are now getting ready to visit West Valley Gold for their annual showdown. Killian 1-3: 2 RBI West Valley Black: (3-2) Ryan Fassler started things off really well against the visiting West Valley squad from Yakima. 3 up and 3 down was the order in the first inning and then our bats started ripping shots all over the field. By the time that first inning was over we had 6 hits and 5 runs. "Jumping on your opponent early in the game like that takes the wind out of them and destroys their will to win. Now if we can learn how to play add-on these games can be over quickly". In the decisive 1st inning, Job Yepez laced a single through the 6 hole, followed by a sizzling single from Nick Meza, Kyle Killian’s single smoked the 6 hole as well and we had our first run. The next hitter Fassler, decided to make their left fielder visit the 7th grade game when he hit a shot over his head that rolled into the game on the 7th grade field. That hit resulted in a triple and 2 rbi. Jake Tolcacher’s sacrifice scored Fassler and the route was beginning. Next up Sterling Clark laced a shot into the right field corner and just kept running and running. When all was said and done, he ended up scoring before the ball ever got to home plate. For good measure Payden Teel kept things going with a single up the middle, and Clayton Dragoo worked the pitcher for a walk. Score after the first inning was 5-0 Colts. We never scored another run until late in the game and watched West Valley try to claw themselves back into the game scoring 6 runs. Final was Prosser 10-6 over WV Black. Yepez: 2-3, run scored, HBP, 2 stolen bases Ellensburg: (2-2) The Colts hosted Ellensburg on April 22nd and busted out the sticks. Several triples and doubles were hit in the game, beautiful sacrifice bunts, and one player darn near hit for the cycle. The Colts scored multiple runs in the third and fifth innings. In the third inning Nick Meza’s rbi triple scored Garrett Hamlin and Meza scored on a rbi double by Kyle Killian. Eric Fassler’s rbi single scored Killian and Jake Tolcacher’s rbi double scored Fassler. In the fifth inning both Clay Dragoo and Colt Manus had rbi singles and well as scored a run in the inning. The web gem of the night was recorded on the last out of the game. The hitter hit a sinking line drive to left field only for it to find the leather of Brandon Metheny’s glove. Brandon was running hard, stayed focused and dove at the last moment for the near impossible catch. Meza: 2-4, run scored, rbi and stolen base Selah: (1-2) The Colts hit the road for the first time this season at Selah. Down early the Colts rallied to load the bases twice and managed to play add on as they built up a 4-1 lead. In the 6th inning Selah bats started to warm up and they managed to score 5 runs and take a 6-4. Down but not out, Sterling Clark hit a sizzling ball over the left fielders head and scored on Nick Meza’s single up the middle. With Nick standing on 2nd Kyle Killian laced a shot up the middle only to be snagged by a surprised pitcher who ended the game with that catch. Another 1 run game for the Colts who have played like champions and could very easily be undefeated on the season. Our bats are starting to warm up and we hit a lot of “at-em” balls that could have easily dropped in for base hits. Ryan Fassler collected 2 RBI’s in the game and Jake Tolcacher pitched a gem of a game striking out 6 batters. Job Yepez: 1-4, Run scored East Valley: (1-1) The Colts battled hard and scored as many runs as the could on 3 hits but it wasn’t enough as they lost a close one 3-2. Ryan Fassler was dominant in his 6 innings of work on the hill striking out 8, giving up 3 runs and walking zero. Kyle Killian added 2 of our 3 hits for the game. Once again our defense was stellar as they only had one miscue and that was a throwing error. The season is early and once our bats wake up and our pitching continues to throw strikes this team will be extremely tough to beat. Killian: 2-3 Naches: (1-0) Prosser managed 4 hits and used 8 walks to score 7 runs as they beat the visiting Rangers of Naches 7-6. Right hander Kyle Killian pitched 4 strong innings, scattering 2 hits, striking out 5 and walking zero. He also contributed to his own cause with the bat collecting half the Colts hits. Jake Tolcacher escaped a scarey start to his pitching to start the 5th inning. After loading the bases on a walk, hit, error he regained his composure to strike out the side. Jake finished with 2 solid innings giving up zero runs, 1 hit and 5 strikeouts. Combined our pitchers were solid giving up 8 hits, striking out 12 and walking ONLY 2 batters. Job Yepez and Payden Teel had the only other hits for the Colts and both were timely hits which resulted in two runs scored. Killian:
2-3, run, stolen base Coach Wade Baker and Alter
Game
Recaps for 7th Grade 2009 7th Grade: West Valley Black On April 27th, the 7th grade Colts hosted the West Valley Black. West Valley Black was one of the teams to BEAT! The first inning our defense kept them from scoring. Evan Jensen started us off with a stand up double. Then Elijah Hoefer the 4th batter came up and laid down the perfect bunt and two runs scored. We went up 3 to nothing and the end of 1. We had nine hits through out the game. Colby White pitched the first 3 innings. He allowed 1 hit and 1 run and had great defense behind him. West Valley Black tried to come back and was unsuccessful. Colts won 10 to 9 in 7 innings. Elijah Hoefer went 4/4: bunt, single, double, and single Ellensburg: The 7th grade Colts hosted Ellensburg on April 22nd and won a close game 7-6. Evan Jensen started the offense going in the first inning with a stand up double and finished the game 1-2. Tanner Cox had a sac bunt in that same inning scoring 2 runs and Kooper Blair kept the game in check with a snare of a line drive and turned it into a double play to hold the visitors at bay.
