Play Ball.....  7th grade game recaps below 8th grade recaps
updated: 5-28-08

8th Grade:

Season Recap:

Prosser ended up with an even record of 5-5. We had the comeback of the year against West Valley and we surprised a lot of teams with our defensive abilities.

As a team, it has been a long time since I have witnessed a team make as much improvement as the 8th graders did this year.  Defensively, we were weak and quit frankly, the coaches wondered if we could get people out.  With a lot of hard work these kids improved and became a solid defensive team. It wasn't even half way through the season when we coaches started talking about this team's ability to play defense.  They could throw the leather and they did.

Offensively they will improve all the way through high school.  Swinging the bats takes time and patience.  As these kids gain more game experience I truly believe their bats will come around.  The same could be said about game situations. They haven't played the game that much so their in-game decisions will improve a ton as they learn how to play the game better by "playing the game a lot in the summers".

Personally, I would like to thank the kids for working their tails off and becoming a very good baseball team.  They learned, practiced hard and improved beyond our wildest dreams.  There is no doubt they are a better baseball team now than at the beginning of the season.

Best wishes to all of you and keep working hard. You've seen the benefits of working hard, take that work ethic into high school and you will succeed in all areas including school work.

Selah vs Prosser

In the last game of the year we played the always tough Selah squad. The kids played well but 3 hits is all we could muster against a very good pitcher. Defensively we lost a few fly balls in the sun and with the way Selah was pounding the ball we weren't going to win scoring only 1 run.

Hitters:

Jason Crowe:  1-2, run and stolen base
Charlie Peterson: 1-2, stolen base
Aaron: 0-1, sac, rbi
Josh Lopez: 1-2

Prosser vs Grandview

In a very weird game, Prosser prevailed 14-4.  The weird part was we scored our first four runs on zero hits.  Same for Grandview. The game as tied until the 4th inning when the Prosser bats started to connect. The blast of the game came off the bat of Aaron Goodhart who nailed a pitch for a long home run. Pitching and was another big contributor in this game as Wyatt Baker and Goodhart combined on a one hitter, striking out 10 batters, but walking 7 on a very tight strike zone.  Prosser also managed to steal 9 bases in the game.

Hitters:

Jason Crowe: 1-2, run, rbi
Charlie Peterson: 2-3, 2 stolen bases
Cesar Hernandez: 2 runs scored, 3 stolen bases
Xvr Woods: 1-2, 3 runs scored, stolen base
Birthday boy: (Jacob Scott): 1-3, rbi, run scored, stolen base
Goodhart: 2-2, 2 runs scored, rbi

West Valley vs Prosser

--> Comeback of the Year <--

Leading up to the decisive 7th inning comeback, the Colts had played their best defensive game of the year. Zero errors, basically doing what they have been taught to doà Make The Routine Play.  Down 8-3 with 3 outs left was a mountain to climb and they did it.  Here’s how it happened.

Lance James lead off the inning with a walk and moved over to 3rd base on Enzo Hurtado’s fly ball to left field.  The next batter struck out so we are now down to 2 outs left with 2 runners on base.  Colton Burleson hit into a fielders choice that forced Enzo out at 2nd.  1 out left in the game.  Jason Crowe laced a single to score James, Wyatt Baker’s hit scored Burleson, Charlie Peterson hit a ball to the shortstop who had to rush his throw after he figured out Charlie can run.  Charlie was safe at first but Crowe scored on the play.  Cesar Herandez (in the 5th inning hit a ball over the parents head who were watching the 7th grade game)  grounded to the 3rd baseman who short armed his throw to first base. The ball ended up in the dirt and allowed Cesar to scamper into first safe, but that scored Baker and now the score was WV 8 Prosser 7.  Aaron Goodhart took a 1-1 pitch and hit it over the left fielders head for a 2 run double and sealed the victory for the Colts.

Wyatt Baker pitched the first 6 innings and pitched to his strength, the defense.  He scattered 10 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3.  Peterson pitched the last inning and gave up a single but that was it.

The kids got a “good pitch to hit”, the pitchers “threw strikes” and the defense made the “routine play”.  That’s a great formula to win games and that’s exactly what they did.  The coaches are extremely proud of the kids work ethic, and that work ethic has allowed them to improve more than any team I’ve ever coached.

Jason Crowe: 2-3, rbi
Wyatt Baker: 2-3, rbi, 2 runs scored
Charlie Peterson: 1-3, rbi double
Cesar Hernandez: 1-3, triple, 2 runs scored
Aaron Goodhart: -1-2, 2 run double
XVR Woods: 1-2
Ken Corliss: 1-2
The Cruz-er: 1-2

Prosser vs Sierra Vista

Prosser traveled to Sunnyside and eventually broke open a tight game and won it by a score of 13 to 2.  Wyatt Baker and Aaron Goodhart combined on a 2 hitter, striking out 6 and walking 4 batters.  Charlie Peterson supplied the offensive punch we neede when he cranked a lead off triple to deep center field to help ignite our offense.  In that inning alone we had 5 of our team total 8 hits. Ken Corliss had the magic 2's going for him as he collected 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 rbi's and 2 stolen bases.  Great job, Ken!

Hitters:

Wyatt Baker: 1-2, rbi, sac bunt
Cesar Hernandez: 1-3, rbi
Charlie Peterson: 1-2, 2 runs scored
Xvr Woods: 1-3, run scored, 2 stolen bases
Ken Corliss: 2-3, 2 runs scored, 2 rbi, 2 stolen bases
Jacob Scott: 1-3, 2 runs scored, rbi, 2 stolen bases
Miguel Pedroza: 1-3, rbi

Ellensburg vs Prosser

We couldn’t have scripted a better start to our offense as Charlie Peterson blasted the 3rd pitch of the game deep into right centerfield for a home run.

We ended up hitting a triple by Ken Corliss and a double by Wyatt Baker and that was it for our offensive output.

Ellensburg prevailed in this game 14-2.

Prosser vs Naches

Don’t ask me how we did, I can’t explain it.  Don’t ask me who had the biggest play, I can’t do that either.  Somehow the Colts managed a way to come back from a 4-0 deficit in the final two frames to score 3 runs in the 6th and 7th inning to win 6-4.  And to cap that off, imagine turning a double play in the 7th inning to help preserve the victory?  It all started with a double play that was unbelievable.  More on that later.

Naches hit the ball hard the first 3 innings to build their lead to 4-0. However, a dropped pop up lead to 2 runs and a misplayed catchable flyball to the outfield helped score the other 2 runs.  This happened while the Colts Struck out 7 times in 3 innings.

In the 6th inning the colts scored 2 runs on zero base hits thanks in part to a squeeze bunt by Charlie Peterson that scored Caleb Hoefer and Josue Lopez.  In the 7th inning their 3rd baseman helped us out tremendously by booting 2 ground balls that could have ended the game, but instead allowed a hit by Lopez to score a  couple of runs to increase the lead to 6-4.

To preserve the victory was a feat in and of itself.

Naches had runners at 2nd and 3rd, with no outs.  A come backer to the mound resulted in the runner at 3rd  stuck in a pickle. He was tagged out by Ken Corliss and then quickly found the runner at 2nd in no mans land.  A couple of throws later that runner was out for our unbelievable double play.  However, it didn’t stop there because the next hitter hit an easy ground ball that was booted and now we had runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs.  With the count even at 2-2 the batter felt the pressure of the game and helped us out tremendously as he swung at ball 3 high over his head for the final out.

Final 6-4

Peterson 1-4 2 rbi
Cesar Hernandez 1-3
Xvr Woods  1-3
Lopez 1-3, double

Prosser vs Harrison

Down 3-1 in the 6th inning Prosser errupted for 3 runs on 2 hits and a walk to beat Harrison 4-3.

In the decisive 6th inning, Miguel Pedroza lead off with a walk, advanced on a bunt single by Jason Crowe and scored on Charlie Peterson's rbi single.  Both Peterson and Crowe scored when the 2nd baseman and Short Stop couldn't figure out who was going to catch a pop up.

For the day Crowe was 1-3 with 2 runs scored. Peterson had 2 singles, scored a run and had the only RBI for the day.

Ken Corliss was 1-3, Jacob Scott was 1-3, XVR Woods was 1-2.

On the mound Aaron Goodhart pitched 3 innings striking out 6 batters, allowing just one hit and giving up one earned run.

Peterson also pitched 3 innings giving up one earned run, sticking out 2 and learning how to strike batters out throwing his now famous, lollie pop pitch.

Prosser Hosts West Valley Black

The 8th grade hosted West Valley Panthers and ran into a buzz saw.  West Valley was pounded out 20 hits in a game that lasted only 4 innings. Final was 18-4.

Prosser managed to get  4 hits (2 of them by Fofo Cruz) and 4 runs scored.

Adolfo Cruz:  2-2, rbi double
Jason Crowe: 1-3, rbi
Cesar Hernandez:  1-1, 2 runs scored and HBP

Prosser hosts East Valley

Prosser started out the game in grand fashion bringing everyone (12) to the plate in the first inning. Combining 6 hits, 2 walks and a HBP they managed to score 6 runs. The top of the next inning EV took advantage of 5 Prosser errors and 3 walks to tie the game up and the next inning scored another 7 runs to seal the game.  Final score was EV 12 and Prosser 8.  Wyatt Baker and FoFo Cruz both had 2 hits a piece to lead the hitting attack for the Colts.

Jason Crowe:  1-1, run scored
XVR Woods:  1-3
Enzo Hurtado: 1-1, 2 walks, run scored and rbi double
Jacob Scott: 1-3
Rodolfo Cruz:  2-2, walk and run scored
Wyatt Baker: 2-3, run scored and rbi

7th grade highlights:

Prosser vs Harrison

The Prosser 7th grade baseball team opened the 2008 season in style with a 9-0 victory vs. Harrison Middle School on Monday.

Colt pitchers combined for a 1 hit shutout in 6 innings of play.  Ryan Fassler, Jake Tolcacher and Kyle Killian handcuffed Harrison hitters allowing only one hit while recording 11 strikeouts.

On offense, they were lead by Colt Manus, Ryan Fassler and Jake Tolcacher who each went 2 for 3 from the plate.  The Colts used a combination of timely hitting, patience at the plate, and the occasional bunt to keep the offense moving on a cold and very windy day.  The speedy Colts racked up 15 stolen bases over 6 innings of play.

Prosser vs West Valley Black

On Thursday the Colts hosted a tough West Valley team and came away with an 11-0 shutout victory.

Ryan Fassler pitched 4 innings of 2 hit shutout baseball for the win while recording 5 strikeouts and 1 walk after facing 16 batters.  Jake Tolcacher closed out the game with 2 solid innings of no-hit pitching facing just 6 batters.

The defense was very solid and recorded 13 outs with no errors. Defensive highlights included a leaping catch from Clayton Dragoo at second base to end the 5th inning and gems from Colt Manus and Bradley Buttars on deep fly balls hit to the outfield.

Kyle Killian exploded at the plate going 3 for 3 on the day with 3 runs, 3 RBI and 4 stolen bases.  Clayton Dragoo scored twice in the game while the Colts continued to be aggressive with 13 stolen bases.
